ReWind
A kitesurfer's bag reborn from recycled kites
Overview
Kitesurfing isn't just a sport; it's a lifestyle woven with adventure, freedom, and the ocean's rhythm. But what happens to a kite when it reaches the end of its journey? ReWind gives these kites a second life — transforming them into stylish, foldable fanny bags that let every wave-rider carry a piece of their story wherever they go.
Context
To understand how kitesurfing evolved, I conducted historical and cultural research, mapping its journey from Polynesian roots to its transformation into an adrenaline-driven sport in the 90s, and its recent shift toward accessibility and sustainability.
Challenge
The aim was to create a functional and sustainable product that supports surfers before and after their sessions — bridging sustainability, identity, and community.
Process
A timeline of the technological, cultural, and branding milestones of kitesurfing helped align the design with both historical trends and future sustainability goals, and positioned O'Neill's role in shaping the industry.
Outcome
ReWind maps a circular relationship between O'Neill, kitesurfers, and the planet: O'Neill provides sustainable, functional products that empower riders with identity, convenience, and community; in turn, kitesurfers contribute to waste reduction and awareness, protecting the planet — which reinforces O'Neill's long-term responsibility and impact.
